Expected to debut shortly, images of BMW’s new X4 concept have leaked their way online.
It doesn’t seem that long ago that the only German SUVs out there were from Mercedes-Benz, with its G-Wagen having been built for decades and its M-Class setting off a raft of new crossovers from across the country. BMW got into the game with the X5 in 1999, but has since taken to it like a proverbial fish to water, bolstering its line-up with the X6, X3 and X1. Next in the pipeline will be the X4. Now the first images of the pre-production concept version have leaked out online. The vehicle pictured here may be billed as a concept, but save for a few minor details, will closely foreshadow the production version to follow. As with the X5 to X6, the X4 will likely carry the same engines as the X3, so expect a 240-horsepower turbo four in an xDrive28i version and a 300hp turbo six in the xDrive35i to be offered Stateside, with diesel engines to join in the range in overseas markets. With the Shanghai Auto Show taking place later this month, we might expect to see it unveiled there. Production will take place at the same Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant where the rest of BMW’s crossover lineup is built.
